Trading Economics global macro models and analysts have pushed expectations of Ghana’s unemployment rate to 4.60 percent by the end of 2021.
While the country’s unemployment rate is projected to slightly decline to 4.40 per cent and further trend downwards to 4.20 per cent in 2022 and 2023 respectively, the focus on skills and industry needs of the Digital skills sector are receiving minute attention.
Technology Experts have posited that “across developing countries, people often don’t see tangible benefits in digital skilling for basic skills and therefore don’t show willingness to pay and learn”.
The International Finance Corporation, in a recent report revealed a strong demand for digital skills in Sub-Saharan Africa and Ghana.
It also projected that over 9 million jobs will require digital skills in Ghana through 2030, translating to about 20 million training opportunities.
Node Hub, in partnership with the Ghana Tech Lab on Saturday, in this vein held its 2nd Digital Skills Job Fair to help establish a network of employers and jobseekers within the digital workspace, which also featured notable organisations.
The fair is under the Pathway to Sustainable Employment (PaSE) program with support from the MasterCard Foundation’s Young Africa Works.
It was designed to help digitally skilled talents secure job opportunities and also create avenues for employers to engage potential employees on current job openings.
This year’s event which attracted young people, graduates and partner organisations, was held under the theme, “Building Resilient Creatives For The Job Market”.
Hub Lead, Mr. Courage Asase, indicated that the fair’s main focus was to create a platform for people with digital skills to meet prospective employers, business promoters, and share opportunities.
He said one of the Hub’s mandates was to help develop a competitive digital ecosystem in the Volta Region similar to other well-developed ecosystems in and beyond the country.
CEO of the region’s real Estate giant, AWAK Company Limited, Mr. Wisdom Atakpa, addressing patrons at the fair said the employment landscape was being digitalized, and advised the youth to seek the right mix of hard and soft skills knowledge to ensure their competitiveness on the job market.
