On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, Node Women teamed up with GroomDatGirl for the Follow WhoKnow Road 3.0 under the theme “Empowering Girls in Sports” at the Ho Tennis Court. The event brought together young girls from Methodist Junior High School and women’s sports clubs like Adidome Unity Ladies FC and Dynamo FC came together to boost their confidence and level up their leadership skills through sports and community vibes.
Follow Who Know Road is GDG’s flagship initiative, aimed at helping girls aged 13-20 in the Ho Municipality find their voice and achieve their dreams. The program uses career guidance and skill-building events to equip young women with the tools to succeed. Node Women, committed to creating spaces for young women to grow, joined forces with GDG to make this edition a success. Past events of GDG, such as Follow Who Know Road 2.0, inspired girls to dream boldly and pursue their aspirations. This year’s edition built on that legacy, focusing on sports as a powerful tool for personal growth and empowerment.
Tilda Acorlor, Team Lead of GroomDatGirl, opened the event by sharing her own journey. She emphasized how sports shaped her life and connected her with opportunities and influential people.
“Sports built my confidence and opened doors I never imagined. It’s not just about the game; it’s about life skills, resilience, and self-belief,” she said passionately.
Her words resonated deeply with participants, setting the tone for a day of inspiration and learning.
Building on Tilda’s message, Perfect Mawulorm Amegboe, community lead for Node Women, highlighted why Node Women collaborated on this event. She explained GDG aligned with Node Women’s mission of empowering young ladies in professional mentorship, and peer learning.
“Tilda is an active member of our community, so we are excited to be a part of her impactful project. This is the kind of collaboration we encourage in the community. I am also delighted other women in the community come out to support in organizing, coordinating the event, and managing the media coverage to enhance its reach.” Perfect explained.
The event was in three main parts – the keynote speech, panel discussion, practical and fun sessions.
Mama Ngorgbe I, Queen Mother of Abor and GFA Referees Instructor delivered a powerful keynote speech. She shared her experiences in sports, encouraging the girls to embrace discipline, teamwork, and consistency as essential tools for success.
Sports isn’t just about the field—it opens doors to careers in journalism, coaching, wellness, and more. These are exciting and rewarding paths you can explore, she advised.
“Being a female in sports, you are not limited to the field of athleticism alone there are fields like being a sports journalist, physical education instructor, physical trainer, wellbeing coach, nutritionist, and other careers are open to you. All these professions come with lucrative incomes so be open-minded to pursue sport fully”. -She emphasized.
In a captivating one-on-one conversation, Tilda Acorlor interviewed Elizabeth Opoku, captain of Ghana’s National Female Hockey Team, the Black Sticks. Elizabeth shared how she started playing hockey, built her career, and balanced her personal life.
“Success requires focus and determination. Stay true to your goals, and you can achieve greatness,” she encouraged the audience.
The discussion offered practical advice and real-life examples to motivate the girls to pursue their passions.
Recognizing the unique challenges women face in sports, GDG organized a session on personal safety led by Superintendent Jeremiah Alale, Ho Municipal Police Commander. He educated participants on identifying harassment, reporting incidents, and staying safe in the sports industry.
The day ended with lively games, fostering teamwork and camaraderie among participants while reinforcing the event’s themes of confidence and collaboration.
