Node Eight Women’s Community and the Women with Disability Development and Advocacy Organization united to commemorate International Women’s Day this year with the theme “Inspire Inclusion,” the event aimed to spark discussions about fostering inclusion for women with disabilities.
According to The World Bank, disabilities affect one in every five women globally, yet their challenges often remain unaddressed, hindering their participation in society due to discrimination and barriers. By providing a platform for women with disabilities to voice their experiences, the event aimed to raise awareness about their struggles and advocate for increased support.
Led by Joanna Nana Kwame, the event commenced with a warm welcome, setting the stage for insightful discussions. Participants engaged in breakout sessions focusing on various aspects of life where women with disabilities encounter obstacles: religious and social groups, career and education, and the home environment.
In the religious and social group sessions, attendees highlighted issues such as physical barriers and social stigma, emphasizing the need for greater inclusivity. They shared their personal experiences as individuals with disabilities, recounting instances of mistreatment from healthcare providers and society at large, as well as neglect from stakeholders in improving their quality of life. They demanded attention to these problems to be solved, thereby inspiring inclusivity.
Discussions in the career and education sessions revolved around discrimination and limited accommodations of people with this disability, which makes it difficult for them to realize their potential.
Also, the breakout sessions addressing the home environment delved into challenges within familial and social circles. Participants emphasized inclusive relationships and societal acceptance, sharing stories of empowerment and support. Throughout the event, participants proposed solutions, including advocating for accessible infrastructure and promoting inclusive policies. These recommendations underscored the need for greater inclusivity, accessibility, and awareness.
As we reflect on International Women’s Day, let us carry forward the spirit of inclusivity and empowerment. Together, we can create a world where every woman’s potential is recognized and valued, regardless of abilities.
