October 25, 2020Ghana is the leader of women-owned businesses in the world. Recent research by SmallBizGenius, women owns 46.4% of privately owned enterprises in Ghana, ranking Ghana higher than Russia (34.6%) and Uganda (33.8%).
However, Ghanaian women-owned businesses face several barriers in accessing public services due to information asymmetry on what policy interventions are available for them and how they could access them. The youth, the disabled and the vulnerable in our community face similar challenges.
To bridge this information asymmetry, Node Hub Foundation in partnership with Reach for Change Ghana and Social Enterprise, Ghana is organizing a Policy Dialogue on the on Saturday, September 26, 2020. The event seeks to bring together policymakers, government agencies, social entrepreneur, leaders of non-governmental agencies and the general pubic together on one platform to dialogue on the theme: “The Role of Duty Bearers in providing youth, women and vulnerable access to government services.”
The Policy Dialogue is the second in the series of events organized to build the capacity of social enterprises in the Volta Region under the ForumSyd Project. On August 29, 2020, 30 representatives from organizations working closely with women, youth, and other vulnerable groups were trained on their economic rights and the process to access these rights to improve the livelihoods of their beneficiaries. These organizations included Zena Foundation, LifeMac Foundation, New Horizon for the Blind among others.
The Policy Dialogue builds on the advocacy training to open up a safe space for discussion on public services available to women, youth, and the vulnerable and how they can best access these services. The event starts at 10:00 AM at the Ho Municipal Assembly Hall. State agencies such as National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI), Ghana Revenue Authority, Social Welfare, Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), and the Municipal Assembly will be at the dialogue.
We believe engaging these institutions will help bring the needed education and information social enterprises need to develop well-tailored programmes for the target beneficiaries.
