Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your musical journey?
Keli Yong: I am Kekeli, born and raised in Ghana. I come from a family of six, and I’m the youngest. Besides music, I’m also into event planning and other ventures. Music is my primary focus, and it takes up most of my time. However, when I’m not working on my music, I enjoy listening to music and watching music videos. It’s a passion that I can’t get enough of.
My musical journey started way back when I was a kid in primary school. I was inspired by my big brother, who played American songs at home. I got hooked on music and started singing and miming those songs. We realized we could do something similar and decided to put money in and go to the studio. From there, we started performing in school and various events, and that’s how my musical journey kicked off.
It seems like your family has a musical background. Could you tell us more about that?
Keli: Yes, my mom used to be a performer in her prime, and she led a dance group. Music and dance run in the family, and my sibling is also a singer, now a pastor.
How would you describe your unique musical style and your plans for the next five years?
Keli: I prefer not to confine myself to a single genre because I value versatility as an artist. My primary focus is creating music that resonates with listeners and sells well, which allows me to explore a range of musical styles; it could be Hip-Hop, R&B, Afrobeat, or anything else that feels right. By experimenting with different sounds, I strive to maintain a fresh and creative approach to my craft.
My base will always be home, but I plan to explore other places and come back to my roots. In the next five years, I hope to release more EPs and eventually an album. I’ll keep working hard to achieve my goals.
The music industry can be challenging and competitive. How do you stay motivated amidst all the ups and downs?
Keli: Challenges are part of the journey, and I’m still climbing my way up. However, I don’t see myself competing with others. I focus on my vision and my team’s support. Staying true to myself and being unique in my style keeps me motivated.
You just performed at the Last Friday hangout. How was your experience?
Keli: It was fantastic! The energy was high, and the audience was enthusiastic. Seeing people enjoy my songs and dance along was surreal. Performing live is always a highlight for me, and it gives me the confidence to keep pushing forward.
Your EP titled; “12:59 A Minute to Greatness” is intriguing. Can you share the inspiration behind it?
Keli: The EP title came about while chatting with my manager about naming the EP. We wanted something powerful and impactful, and “12:59 A Minute to Greatness” came to us during a moment of greatness.
What advice would you give to aspiring musicians or those looking to follow their passions?
Keli: Pursuing your passion requires dedication and hard work. You may face challenges but focus on what you can control and give your top effort. Don’t be discouraged by setbacks, instead stay focused on your dream, and keep pushing forward.
