July 13, 2020Youth and graduate unemployment in Ghana is a ticking time bomb. Many young people cannot find sustainable jobs after graduating from tertiary institutions. According to a recent report by the Statistics, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) of the University of Ghana, only 10 per cent of these graduates find jobs after the first year of graduation.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the unemployment challenge as several companies folded up while others downsized. It is on the back of this that the Ghana Technology Lab is working with Ho Node Hub to recruit and train 30 graduates in the Volta Region in web development.
The trainees would be taken through six weeks of intense training in the web-based relevant technologies. These include HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Python, Adobe XD. They would also be introduced to design thinking methodology to identify and solve a community problem using the web development skills they would acquire.
At the end of the six weeks, the trainees would have the opportunity to pitch their tech-based ideas to a panel of judges at a startup summit. The best two ideas would join an incubation program after the training session. The rest of the trainees would be placed with tech firms for an internship program.
We believe the program would equip the graduates with the skills and experiences they need to begin a career in the digital economy post COVID.
